Bag Care
Vanport Outfitters makes bags that last, but also age well. Proper care is important not just to maintain, but to cultivate that perfect worn look.
Generally you can think of our bags fitting into two categories: waxed and unwaxed. The same philosophy applies to cleaning all our bags, but there are extra limitations on the care of waxed canvas bags. Waxed canvas should never be laundered or exposed to detergents. But if any of your Vanport Outfitters bags gets a bit dirtier in one spot than you'd like, follow these steps in the process of restoring its proper coloration.
- First try water only, even a large stream like your shower, and gentle scrubbing only if necessary.
- If some dirt is persistent, a bit of bar soap should be applied only directly to the stained area.
- For our unwaxed products under extreme circumstancesperhaps that beach you brought the Sauvé to was more muddy than sandy?laundering is fine, on gentle cycle with cold water. The fibre reactive dyes of our unwaxed canvas won't run, but laundry should still be avoided unless necessary.
- As mentioned above, the waxed fabrics should not be laundered, dry cleaned, or be exposed to detergents.
- Still, you may occasionally wish to reapply some wax to a bag either in one spot, or as some prefer thickening the entire coat for extra waterproofing. We suggest either Martexin Original Wax, made by the same group that weaves our canvas, or an all-natural and Portland-made canvas wax, Otter Wax.
